Revolutionizing South Africa’s Energy Landscape: GeFP and EKONAMI SE’s Green Methanol Project

GeFP, a South African Project developing company in the E-Fuel space, has announced a project in partnership with EKONAMI SE who is part of a German Consortium to develop a Green Methanol project. The project aims to produce 800,000 tons per year of Green Methanol using renewable sources of carbon. The first steps of the project will deliver 20.000tpa Green MeOH in the Vaal region.

Methanol is an important feedstock for the chemical industry, and this project will help decarbonize South Africa's marine and chemical sectors. GeFP will utilize EKONAMI SE‘s modular electrolysis and methanol synthesis equipment to create one of the largest Green Methanol productions in the world. The project is expected to take place over a span of ten years, with a total scope of supply close to 1 GW.

Additionally, the project will establish a Green Methanol Corridor that extends from Gauteng to KwaZulu Natal. The announcement was made during the South African Green Hydrogen Summit, which brought together stakeholders from the green hydrogen industry
